The E Haplogroup of Y chromosome (male, or patrilineal) lineages is one of the major haplogroups of all mankind. It is the dominant haplogroup of Africa, and a member along with Haplogroup D (found in East Asia) of the still more ancient "Haplogroup DE" or "YAP" clade.

See also the relevant article in Wikipedia and ISOGG's website. The following is based upon the ISOGG summary as of April 2009...

1. E (the root of the whole haplogroup) is normally defined by one or both of the following two mutations, which have so far always been found together...

  • M40 also known as SRY4064 also known as SRY8299
  • M96

Therefore it can be called E-M96, or E-SRY4064 for example. Other mutations always apparently found together with these ones include P29, P150, P152, P154, P155, P156, P162, P168, P169, P170, P171, P172, P173, P174, P175, and P176.

1.0. E* or for example E-M96*. This is the name given to any Y chromosome which has the mutations of E, but known of the recognized mutations defining the major branches (E1 and E2).
